Armenian PM vows to personally amend Constitution if top court blocks peace deal with Azerbaijan
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that he will personally initiate amendments to Armenia’s constitution if the Constitutional Court does not approve the peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
“We must send the agreement to the Constitutional Court. There is no other choice. If the Constitutional Court decides that the agreement does not comply with Armenia’s laws, my personal position is that I will initiate constitutional amendments, because I believe the opportunity to conclude peace cannot be missed,” he said at the international forum Yerevan Dialogue, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Notably, official Baku has repeatedly stated that, in order to sign a peace agreement, Armenia must make changes to its constitution, which contains direct territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Another demand from Azerbaijan is the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
In January 2024, Pashinyan declared that the country needs a new constitution "that will ensure the country's viability in the new geopolitical conditions." Later, he clarified that the provisions of the Declaration of Independence, which form the basis of the Armenian constitution, threaten the country with war.
