Hands-free to your doorstep: Tesla begins testing driverless deliveries in Texas

Elon Musk has announced that Tesla Inc. has been testing Model Y vehicles equipped with full self-driving capabilities on public roads in Austin, Texas, for several days without incident, and that customer self-deliveries will begin in June.

Musk shared the news on his social platform X (formerly Twitter), per Caliber.Az.

For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents.

A month ahead of schedule.

Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer.

“For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents. A month ahead of schedule,” he wrote.

“Next month — the first self-delivery from factory to customer,” he added. 

Musk has repeatedly described Autopilot technology as Tesla’s next major growth driver, especially as the company grapples with a sustained slowdown in vehicle sales.

The Tesla CEO previously said that the electric carmaker also intends to begin testing its long-promised robotaxi service in Austin starting at the end of June.

However, the company continues to face intensified scrutiny from regulators over claims about its self-driving capabilities.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology has reportedly been involved in several collisions in low-visibility conditions since last year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating the safety claims related to the system.
